PLEASE READ – Important Information

STATEMENT REGARDING STRANGLES IN THE AREA

As our membership know, our show on August 15th was cancelled due to a local case of strangles. This purpose of this statement is to give the frank facts regarding this, and to put a stop to any gossip. This gossip always worsens a situation out of all proportion, and is usually started by someone either misinformed or blatantly malicious. As a club we have been kept up to date with this situation and want to make it clear to you.

There was a single case of strangles, which presented over three weeks ago. This horse has never grazed either the show or parking field, nor has it been in contact with those who have. The show fields will not be grazed in any case in the run up to the Bank Holiday weekend and the NWSJC and NWWHC. The infected horse was kept in total isolation, and all subsequent tests are negative. These clear three weeks take it past the incubation period. No other animal has been affected. The people and staff involved have followed all possible safety protocol and no cross contamination has occurred. The horse is now passed fit with a clean bill of health and is back in normal circulation.

Following veterinary advice, the yard has returned to normal and we are absolutely cleared to go ahead with the Bank Holiday weekend Finals. These events will go ahead as normal. At no time would this club ever put the welfare of its membership or any competitor at risk.

As there could be isolated cases elsewhere in the country, the following rules apply and will absolutely be adhered to:

1 – There will be NO ENTRY to the riding school yard at the venue from the showground, or vice-versa for ANY COMPETITORS.  Access to the show field will be from the parking field ONLY.

2 – Any horse who appears to be unwell or has nasal discharge as per the symptoms of strangles will be send home IMMEDIATELY.

3 – If you come from a yard with any cases of strangles or have been in contact with any within the last three weeks, no matter where you are from, please DO NOT attend the North West championships on Bank Holiday weekend. Any breach of this rule will result in a lifetime ban both from Bridgewater Riding Club and also the North West championships.

Please do not pay heed to gossip, as no matter how well intended, the root source may not be reliable. If you are told anything differing from this statement, it is NOT TRUE.

If any of you have questions, please contact a committee member. We will continue to monitor the information regarding strangles cases in Cheshire.

Thank you, and see you at the Finals!
